Constraint over freedom. Though the concept of ‘freedom’ is compelling and implies liberation and the opportunity to be more creative, it is constraint and limitation that often encourages the best results. Constraint and complexity forces you to solve particular problems, to satisfy specific requirements, to respect the work of previous designers and builders.
Flemish bond becomes an opportunity not a restriction.
This project is full of constraint. Conservation area, grade 2 listed, the need to turn two houses back into two houses, after years of insurance. The need and the desire to recover their 18th century soul, in cornices, floors, staircases, chimney breasts and atmosphere. The need to extend both houses backwards without building an extension. And finally building a new stand alone property at the back of the two existing houses.
