Once a family home, 39 Great Ancoats Street has been cast in the shadows of history, unused, for many years. Ancoats has seen its fair share of growth in recent years from which the opportunity has risen to reinstate 39 Great Ancoats Street as a family home.
On entering, the house will be flooded gently with as much natural light as possible with materials and details reflecting its history, context and the new family within. The light flue and extension have a lightweight, tectonic timber frame which act as the bones of the building to connect the existing, untouched elements of the Victorian Town house to the modern extension.
As much natural light as possible is absorbed on the north facing façade and into the House’s secret garden, leaving no light to escape through the Great Ancoats Street elevation, which is painted matte black to emphasise of its shadow status in the street.
