The aim of the project was to provide a high quality scheme for the next generation of student accommodation by developing a landmark building that met the cutting edge demands in sustainability and environmental issues. In order to merge seamlessly with the context the scheme comprises of 8 storeys rising to 9 storeys towards the Campus creating a L shape that encloses a private courtyard. This provides 159 bedrooms of accommodation.
The streetscape, built form, scale, height and effect of the scheme on the skyline have been considered in the immediate context of the site and from other areas in the city centre. The proposal sought to ‘key-in’ with the surrounding ‘urban topography’ through a series of scale relationships in order to have a positive effect on the building as viewed from key vistas.
Our proposal represents a high quality architectural design solution developed through careful consideration of scale, form, massing, proportion, profile, materials and relationships with the neighbouring context. Set-back living room windows and a mixture of flush, set back and extruded bedroom windows increase the articulation and depth of the elevations.
